About Costa Rica & Jaco

Costa Rica is a relatively small country located between Panama and Nicaragua, measuring approximately 52,000 km2, this natural haven contains almost 5% of the worlds biodiversity, even though its landmass only takes up .03% of the planets surface. Our district and capital city Jaco, is located in Garabito, within the province of Puntarenas. Garabito comprises 316.13 km2 of area with a population of just over 20,000 people.

Jaco itself is directly located between Herradura and Hermosa beaches, approximately 23 feet above sea level and surrounded by tropical rainforest covered mountain ranges. Our district is a part of the biological corridor Paso de Las Lapas (which means the way of the macaws), a conservation effort directed by SINAC, which is a part of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) of Costa Rica; the administrator for the nation's national parks, conservation areas, and other protected natural areas. 

The country features an incredibly diverse natural wealth such as verdant rainforests, mangrove swamps, cloud forests, spectacular beaches, volcanoes, waterfalls and coral reefs, these are just some of the many habitats protected by the national parks and reserves of Costa Rica. Less then an hour away from Jaco are two of the most well known national parks in the country; Carara and Manuel Antonio.

Jaco and close surrounding areas are also globally known for our great surf spots, having hosted the world surf league games in 2016 and set to be the destination for the next qualifying WSL competition. Jaco beach

Situated on the Central Pacific coast, Jaco Beach is just over an hours drive from San Jose and the Juan Santa Maria International Airport, making it the closest beach town to the capital. HERMOSA BEACH

Located 5km south of Jaco, this beach is known for its phenomenal surf and breathtaking black sand beach. Home to weekly surf contests, many big-name surf competitions also make their way to Hermosa Beach to host world-renowned local and international surfers. Hermosa offers beach-front property with stunning views, as well as homes that peek out of the mountain forests to overlook the beach. Restaurants, bars and accommodations are fewer than neighboring Jaco, but with plenty of options Hermosa is great for those seeking a more low-key environment. This is truly the surfer capital of the Pacific coast. With local restaurants and excellent accommodations surrounded by lush rainforest on one side and the beach on the other, what more could you ask for?

ESTERILLOS

Esterillos Oeste and Esterillos Este make up this contiguous stretch of pristine beach, enjoyed primarily by locals lending to empty beached and ample space to enjoy all that these beautiful beaches have to offer. Great surf and beach you an walk for miles makes Esterillos a surfer’s paradise, with snorkeling and standup paddle boarding among beach-goers’ favorite activities. With a smattering of bars, restaurants, and accommodations, this area is ideal for those looking for a laid-back, peaceful environment, while not out of reach of the abundant amenities available within less then a 30 minute drive north to Jaco. With private homes and condominiums being less abundant, Esterillos offers a rich streak of non-local, localism.
